Omg I randomly listened to The Call in 2022 and could not stop for like at least 6 months, telling everybody how it's a goddamn masterpiece ESPECIALLY the "my battery is low" line. I feel so validated

Absolutely dying at The Call. I had a huge phase with that song a few years ago, along with Get Another Boyfriend (which fun fact, was actually featured in a Lizzie Maguire episode…)

I’ve been listening to EOAS for a while and just decided to dive into Lizard Review. I specifically also came to Substack to say that you are so right about “The Call” being ridiculously underrated and I’m glad someone said it. I specifically got hooked on the version featuring The Neptunes that basically only existed on one of the “Now That’s What I Call Music” albums?? So now the youths today will never know. 🥲

Similarly, absolutely co-signing “Piece of Me.” That’s still probably the most played song from Blackout for me TO THIS DAY. I distinctly remember seeing the music video for it and being obsessed.

I feel so seen about The Call and its golden melody. The music video also altered my brain chemistry as a matrix fangirl

I wore out my Gwen CD in my car in 2004 listening to What You Waiting For on repeat. The line born to blossom/ bloom to perish” is pure poetry.

I knew that the Backstreet Boys mention would be The Call, indeeed an unfairly forgotten bop. It was 2001 though. Although this single came out before 9/11 i think september of 2001 marked the end (or at lest the beggining of the end) for the golden age of boybands and teen pop. It was ok when the biggest issue on the news regarded the extraconjugal affairs of the american president in the oval office. Things turned a bit darker after the turn of the millenium and it made "bubblegum pop" seem a little more out of place. Besided, teenagers grew up, as they ought to do... and thus BSB were never to be seen on the charts again.
