The third in a series where I go through the most IMPORTANT and influential albums in my life. This is a record from 2010 that defined MY days of girlhood.
Really appreciate you talking about how Kesha was treated like a joke by critics at the time. This was still a time where "slut-shaming" and demonizing of the party girl as a "Jezebel" figure were still a part of the larger social attitude towards female celebrities.
The criticism reeked of classism as well, there's a difference in the minds of the public between Katy Perry's upbringing in a middle class pastor's home and Kesha's upbringing being raised by a single mother on welfare. The number of times I heard average middle class Karens refer to Kesha as "white trailer trash"...
A new interview from the red era just dropped, the hunger games/safe and sound promo where Taylor talks about writers block amongst many other things… I’m sensing a new podcast !!!!
As a girl who was in her sophomore year of highschool in 2010…. I just paused the episode to brace myself for the album review. Idk if I’m ready to revisit this media era 😭
My friends and I were little hooligans in middle/high school so these songs only further fueled our party girl phase. We would sneak out of my friends basement (where we basically all lived during the summer) and steal her mom’s car to go to parties and scream sing along to these songs blasting in the speakers. “Take it Off” in particular was “our song” and will always take me back to those summer nights whenever I hear it. 🫠
charlie is so ke$ha coded man. i've thought this for ages. i was homeschooled until 2011 middle school so yuh her early music shaped my youth. its really weird misogyny works like if ever a woman does something silly she's automatically deemed vapid and stupid instead of just plain funny and kooky.
I loved this so much!! The way you talk about celebrating girlhood and embracing what makes you happy is so special and insightful. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with the world!!!
The fact that many people probably only came around on Kesha and started treating her seriously as an artist after the Dr Luke case… jail…
