Madeleine!! I love your take on this, because I am also one of the 3 people in this world that thinks that Sweet Nothing is criminally underrated!! Something that fascinates me about this song is how on some days it feels like a love song, whereas on others it feels deeply sad. I wonder if this is because Taylor initially loved Joe bc he didn't care that she was THE Taylor Swift, but then eventually broke up with him because he didn't care that she was THE Taylor Swift... all that he ever gave her was sweet nothing...

And I’m the third lol.

Something about this song clicked when the breakup happened and I couldn't put it into words, so thank you for doing so. Like, I would walk around my house singing "does it ever miss Wicklow sometimes?" over and over again bc it is weirdly one of my favorite lines of hers even though Sweet Nothing wouldn't even crack my top 30 favorite Taylor songs!

That line also has a deeper sentiment to me that she is using the pebble to project her own question onto it: Do you [Joe] ever miss Wicklow sometimes, or is it just me [Taylor]? Am I the only one romanticizing our past bc our present isn't as good? It's her wanting to get back to what they used to have. And perhaps she's even further ruminating on how she will miss the 'home' she feels in him once things are over as the pebble does after being taken from where it belongs.

A great follow up to this would be a lyrical analysis of Paris, because it’s touching the same subjects as sweet nothing/the lakes/peace: about being in your own cocoon, not focused on the people outside. Also Paris is very misunderstood while it’s one of the best written songs

It is about what the pebble means. And some people will just never understand that. Not like I understand it. And I feel sad for those people. As soon as you said the actual pick succeeded at what NYD attempted to do I was sat and I clapped and I cheered and I knew I was in for a treat. A sweet sweet nothing treat. Brava ✨✨✨

I always thought this is such a great love song. I think this was just pushed aside by so many as like a good bye song and after like the overboarding of the information of break up there are just so many misinterpretations of this song like on every single corner. But I always thought of it as a love song, even played it for my homie on piano,he loved. Thanks Madeline for confirming it's always been a love song.it's so good

Knew you’d pick sweet nothing once you said New Year’s Day tried to do what the song you picked does

wow wow wow. ok i think you are 100% right with this BUT i may need to make a video of my lyrical analysis as a response because it’s a “yes and” type of deal. this song is brilliant and has dichotomy written into its very DNA. it also has one of THE BEST easter eggs she has ever created lurking in the text and IT HURTS SOOOOOOO GOOD lollll

i love your analysis and this made me sooo deeply sad about it being joever... like parasocial moment but i worry that the things she demonstrates in a song like this that she values/valued so deeply in her relationship with joe, she is Not going to get from travis... like im getting a little unpilled...

This really gave me a new insight into Sweet Nothing! My personal fave love song by Taylor Swift is still Cowboy Like Me.

I kinda take "they say the end is coming" as being aware on some level that this relationship will end. I feel this song as bittersweet, like saying goodbye. I don't know if she'd agree though.

This song always breaks me, especially “to you i can admit, that i’m just too soft for all of it,” broken. absolutely broken.

Midnights to me is an album where she’s mulling over whether or not to stay with Joe. Obviously we have songs like Bejeweled, Maroon, You’re Losing Me, etc. where she’s like “no he’s not worth it.” But then we have songs where she’s remembering all the good times and how he made her happy. Snow On The Beach, Paris, and this song being the crown jewel. Thank you for helping me see the good in Sweet Nothing again after I lost faith in it post Joever.

I just need ttpd jesuuusssss!!!! To think that this was at the end of their relationship just shows how tumultuous must've been the break up but like emotionally tumultuous you know?

Crystal Clear and Sweet Nothing TO ME are the best love songs written this decade. Even if it is a Joever song, i just feel like they capture the feeling perfectly
