Girlies these songs aren’t just songs, they’re my life!!!!! I can’t tell you how much songs like Stained Glass Window, Guilty as Sin, Silver Ford, But Daddy I Love Him, etc. literally describe my life.

I was raised Mormon and just barely left it a year ago. I’m not in a queer relationship but I fell in love with a guy outside of the church and just thinking about the fucking drama of the past six months makes me want to scream with frustration. Oh well, he’s so worth all of it ♥️♥️♥️

I know right, best $7 I ever spent. When I see a new episode post I swear my body relaxes. It’s comforting like hearing a Taylor song out in the wild.

Yes can’t wait to listen to this. Silver ford is my favorite Sunday (1994) song. My wife and I just got married so …. We are blasting the queer themed Sunday (1994) songs. Sadly my wife drives a gray Toyota and not a silver ford… doesn’t roll of the tongue quite as well.

Omg also I’m listening to the part where you’re talking about people thinking the band is genuinely religious… I took some friends who never heard the band to the show in DC and when we left one of them was like, “I couldn’t hear the words exactly but was this band religious???” And I had to explain. It’s forgivable with live music though, but on the internet no way.

Wow lizard, you have such a talent for this work and lyrical analysis. I wonder when you listen to songs is all of this going through your head or do you have to actually sit down and think and write to find all of these themes and meanings and connections?

The first time I listened to silver ford I wasn’t fully paying attention to lyrics and thought the song was about a serial killer picking her up in their silver ford and she will happily go with them… kinda in a Lana del Rey way (what’s the worst that can happen to a girl who’s already hurt). Well anyway then I really listened and found a deeper story but the melancholy I felt on first listen doesn’t go away, because the theme is the same, like you described… looking for a savior in someone or a relationship. I’m just so impressed with your analysis.

The way I need a lizard review/breakdown of Ethel Cain is alarming

Melinda's avatar

I think she did a breakdown of preachers daughter by Ethel Cain before. I can’t remember if it’s a podcast or written piece but it’s definitely somewhere on substack. (Not sure if it’s for paid people only) also it’s such a good breakdown and I highly recommend it.

I personally think the early episodes hold up so good (maybe I’m biased because I was listening from the first episode)! I actually didn’t fully understand Ethel Cain and her project until your insights transformed the media for me.

The ending of Silver Ford, especially (where you're reminded the whole thing was a fantasy and she's still trapped etc.) reminds me a lot of the final "I sit and watch you" in tolerate it. After the whole emotional release about how she can get out of the situation you get brought back to the reality that she ultimately decides to stay (which is the thing that truly makes me mental about the song as if it wasn't bad enough without it, and for a while I just passed off as the repetition of a line before realising the intention behind it).
