I was with you on the tropical Christmas hate train until you started speaking about my Queen Mele Kalikimaka, she’s different

My hot take is that the song from the Polar Express is one of the best Christmas songs but nobody will admit it because they’re scared of the CGI people lol. But I swear it gets me every time 🥲

Omg I would die to hear your commentary on this movie, it's hilarious CGI but also heartwarming

You're right and you should say it.

Hahah you should!! My opinion is skewed bc I saw it when I was like 10 and having one of the best Christmases ever, but I really don’t think it’s as bad as everyone says it is

Have you heard the new Laufey Christmas EP? I think it’s super cute.

Lol as someone who grew up in Miami I had no choice but to embrace tropical Christmas. I have never seen snow on Christmas so I must imagine. We have to pretend Madeline!!! Pretending is all we have!!! We have no choice!!!!

I love mele kalikimaka 😭

Something About December by Christina Perri is one of my favourite low-key Christmas songs!

I mean "let all your memories hold you close no matter where you are, you're not alone because the ones you love are never far if Christmas is in heart" WELL YES

If you want to bawl your eyes out,”So Much Wine,” sung by Phoebe Bridgers. It’s on a Christmas album by the same name. She used to add a new song every year, I believe.

i love this episode and the shoutout to holiday seasoning because that station suddenly means everything to me….anyway i concur with the other suggestion of laufey’s christmas ep, and because you shouted out christina perri’s cover of merry christmas darling, i also want to add that i have spent YEARS loving her little christmas ep. something about december by christina perri is a cute original christmas song too. i’ve also loved sabrina’s fruitcake ep overall. otherwise, miscellaneous original christmas song suggestions (some of which you probably already know!): one more sleep by leona lewis, christmas calling by norah jones, christmas lights by coldplay, ribbons and bows by kacey musgraves, christmas in LA by vulfpeck, and home alone too by the staves (this randomly came on a christmas station one year on my alexa and it has now gone double platinum on my spotify)

Second comment 😂

One of my favorite not-quite-a-Christmas-song-but-winter-vibes songs is Bells of New York City by Josh Groban. I love his voice, I've been obsessed with him since my theater kid days, and the song is truly beautiful and melancholic in a way that feels like strolling through the city alone on a cold blustery day while the bustle of Christmas shoppers surrounds you.

Finally listening to this (I've been obsessively listening to a book series on audiobook so I'm behind on podcast eps.)

You're going to hate me for this but I NEED to share it with you: Greensleeves is the older of the two songs. For a long time, it was rumored to have been written by King Henry the 8th for Anne Boleyn. Yes, THAT Henry the 8th. Yes, THAT Anne Boleyn. Scholars say it can't be though because there is an earlier Italian composition that is similar, and they think the English version was inspired by that. BUT STILL. That particular myth shook me to my core when I first heard it at age 12.

What Child is This? was written in the 1800s by an insurance guy who had a near death experience and wrote the lyrics to the tune of the Old folk song.

... yes, I am obsessed with Christmas music trivia.

My two favorite Christmas songs are Christmas Island (the one by Jimmy Buffett) and Mel’s Kalikimaka 😭 well wouldn’t you like to spend Christmas on Christmas Island?? Wouldn’t you?

i feel like girl in red might be an artist that you don’t gravitate toward, but as a queer person she has a lot of nice songs that hit different. her song “two queens in a king sized bed” is one of my favorite modern christmas songs. it’s very jingly and sweet and simple. i’d recommend checking it out. and if you do like girl in red, i have other non-christmas song recs for you 🧑‍🎄

On a separate note, I have to ask if you have seen The Magnificent Ambersons (Orsin Welles)? Two reasons I’m asking…one is your use of the word Comeuppance and two is that I noticed it on the movie theater marquee in a Gilmore Girls rewatch. It’s so amazing, and it has Endora when she was young as well as one of the best sleigh ride scenes ever.

I’ve never seen that before!!!!!!! I should check it out
