My hot take is that the song from the Polar Express is one of the best Christmas songs but nobody will admit it because they’re scared of the CGI people lol. But I swear it gets me every time 🥲
Lol as someone who grew up in Miami I had no choice but to embrace tropical Christmas. I have never seen snow on Christmas so I must imagine. We have to pretend Madeline!!! Pretending is all we have!!! We have no choice!!!!
I love mele kalikimaka 😭

i feel like girl in red might be an artist that you don’t gravitate toward, but as a queer person she has a lot of nice songs that hit different. her song “two queens in a king sized bed” is one of my favorite modern christmas songs. it’s very jingly and sweet and simple. i’d recommend checking it out. and if you do like girl in red, i have other non-christmas song recs for you 🧑🎄
On a separate note, I have to ask if you have seen The Magnificent Ambersons (Orsin Welles)? Two reasons I’m asking…one is your use of the word Comeuppance and two is that I noticed it on the movie theater marquee in a Gilmore Girls rewatch. It’s so amazing, and it has Endora when she was young as well as one of the best sleigh ride scenes ever.
Madeline, I love hearing your take on different Christmas music. Have you ever listened to The Roches Xmas album The Three Kings? It has two *original* songs they wrote that are both in my Christmas Top Ten, with Star of Wonder being my all time fave. The second is called Christmas Passing Through which is one of those songs that creates a specific feeling. Harmonies are out of this world bc they are three sisters. The whole album is superb!! Also EmmyLou Harris Light of the Stable has a few great ones, esp the opening track Christmas Times a-Comin’ (the dulcimer and mandolin are fantastic). Jane Siberry has a live album “Child” with a song “Neighbor, Neighbor” which is so witty and funny (Quoi, Ma Voisine, Es-Tu Fachee?)). Finally, Grover Washington Jr’s version of Breath of Heaven is my fave version of that one (vocals by Lisa Fisher). Merry Christmas, Baby (Bruce Springsteen)!!!
I was with you on the tropical Christmas hate train until you started speaking about my Queen Mele Kalikimaka, she’s different
Have you heard the new Laufey Christmas EP? I think it’s super cute.
