Flo need to focus on marketing their personality cuz excellent music just doesnt cut it anymore - in today’s world, its the girlies that can be quirky or vulnerable or outlandish or have a popular scandal that get enough cultural cache to really launch a career. I partly blame stan culture - they want the person (or really, the idea of the person) as much as they want the music. A true disadvantage of this tho is that black girls are typically not credited with having personality per se - they are dumped into very specific narratives/tropes that they have to claw their way out of. Look at how ppl react to sabrina vs megan - both overtly sexual but which one is largely seen as “the slut”? I love flo, and as a fellow london black girl their personalites are so relatable. I hope the world doesnt pigeonhole them - or worse, ignore them.
I think its crazy cuz Flo has some of the better promotions. They had a roller rink in London, they opened for Kehalni, and they are going on tour. I think the issue is that labels tens to have promotions only focus on getting more into people's faces and not enough on performances. They want a viral success with the least amount of investment. There is what colours, tiny desks, and vevo? Talk shows? I think touring and being openers are the best thing for artists to do besides brand sponsors. Its why the parkwood slander about Chole and Halle is ridiculous, those girls are BOOKED.
I re-listened to the album again today before hearing this episode and I also COMPLETELY forgot about “Caught Up” 😅. But yeah the Intro?????? Come onnnnnn as you said, cunt serve of the century the way the production and vocals blend and make it so larger than life I literally felt like I was in a space station and they were announcing the blast off into another galaxy 🚀
