I was listening to this on speaker while me and my husband were getting ready to go out for dinner and he looked over and was like, I see why you listen to her so much
Dude slow clap. This series is incredible. Lizard you are incredible. Thank you so much for this in depth analysis of pop culture-it is a reminder that pop culture is so meaningful-infused with society, politics, gender, ect. The way you talked about Brittany with so much empathy was a salve to how I remember her in the tabloids as a kid. This was super educational for me as a 2003s baby-the back to back trajectory of Brittany’s mistreatment puts everything in perspective and you did that so beautifully. The theming of this episode and placing of each story to unravel misogyny in pop culture felt like a dissertation analysis🤯
this is a masterpiece. i grew up at a similar age to you, and it was really cathartic to walk back through these events. i’ve always been fascinated by pop culture & pop music, and how large the role of misogyny plays. the pipeline of defending britney to being a swiftie is real bc the veins of misogyny have always been at the forefront of our battles. i am so so interested in hearing you explore this more, especially in the context of new wave misogyny.
I came back to say I have shaved my head before. I just dyed it and bleached it so many colors, and so often, and decided I was over it. I wanted to start over. It was freeing.
every time i see the footage of beyonce inviting taylor back up to have her moment it makes me tear up. it's so crazy to see how they went onto become not only peers but like... pillars of the music industry. beyonce showing taylor such kindness and empathy in that moment was so sweet. truly a profound moment that turned around something so humiliating. i will also neverrrr forget watching that live!!! deeply formative.
"Pop culture is the world we live in. it is the world we create, and the world that creates us." powerful stuff Madeline!!! thanks for such a great double episode :)
Feeling guilty as hell as I bought every US Weekly that covered Britney back in the day. I was obsessed with her! But not until later did I fully realize how we tore her apart. Sweet Britney. Raw talent from Louisiana who dominated the entire world!
You *should* be so proud of these episodes. They were both very well done - both your writing and the editing by Tyler. After listening to you for years now, it’s fascinating to listen to these because the fact that these are your top ten…makes so much sense. It really adds a lot of background to your musical taste and how you express your opinions. And for the record, I cheer for all of that. I’m a teacher and listening to these episodes (and so many more that you’ve done), I think your English teachers would be proud too. Brava, Lizard! This was a big feat!
I had a baby in 2024 and let me tell you, the ANXIETY I had as a new, first-time mom. I would feel stressed putting my child in the car seat in public because my back would be unprotected and what if someone came up behind me? I can’t imagine the insane stress of taking care of a newborn while paparazzi are harassing me and threatening the safety of my child. Add on the lack of familial support she must have experienced, I feel even worse for her than I ever have. I’m so sorry society treated her so poorly.
